The Origin of Canopy Beds

A canopy bed features a bed head, or tester, with tall post at each corner at least four feet high that supports a fabric covering that can be drawn back. It is still found in many homes today and are popular in resorts and hotels for their romantic appeal.

The term canopy came from 14th century France. The French word canope which means bed curtain traces back to the Latin word canopeum and anterior to that, from Greeks' konopeion, a couch with mosquito curtains. All were derived from konops, a gnat or mosquito.

Considered today as elegant, canopy beds have their origins completely ordinary and unremarkable. This might interest you to know that canopy beds evolved from a box bed, an ordinary wooden box encasing a bed.

Early houses during the middle Ages had no insulation that could really provide warmth and protection. Houses during those days were made of wattle and daub with thatched roofs. The doors and windows provided niggling obstruction to the wind. They only filter the snow out of the wind as it passed through the house. It was so cold that even if you bundled up in bed with piles of blankets it was not very warm.

With this need, box bed with a door that closes was designed. Indeed, it was a great help to keep the wind off the bed as the bed was actually inside the wooden box thus, retaining warm air around. The cold breeze coming through the house might not have enough force to pass through its wall. If you were afraid of closed-in places, box bed was really claustrophobic.

Those who can afford used fabric to keep the body heat around the bed. Only the super wealthy could afford enough fabric to encase a bed. Those who have less in life found satisfaction inside a wooden box. With the bed on the ground, they put the same in the corner of the room so that only the top and two sides were encased.

Another reason for the creation of box bed was the falling objects from the roof. Thatched roofs were home to caterpillars and other insects that often fell down causing discomfort to the one sleeping below. For folks who can afford fabrics, posts were erected over the top to catch any stubborn pests. Indeed, canopy beds were a necessity during those times.

Landowners who lived in castles had other reasons for using canopy beds. In early European castles the lord, his family and servants slept in a single large room. They used canopy beds to allow for a bit of privacy. When castles afforded separate sleeping chambers, canopy beds were still in use to provide warmth.

Today canopy beds may no longer be a need but simply a desire in France and in Old England; however in many parts of the world, they are still considered a must. Where there are gnats, there are nets on canopy beds.

Canopy beds have developed a lot from an extremely conventional box bed to the ever stylish and forever desired bedroom furniture. It comes in different vogue and fashion, from carved wood to ornate cast iron. People who love magnificence prefer canopy beds adorned with matching canopy tops and luxury bed linens. A Brief History of Canopy Beds

A canopy bed is that which is designed to include posts from all ends of the bed and which uses draperies or fabrics.  It may either have a ceiling or just the posts.  But whatever design of a canopy bed that you have, fact is, it gives an elegant vibe in your bedroom.  Elegance and class are usually associated with a canopy bed.  Let's find out how these beds revolve into existence and why they were created.

During the Medieval period four poster beds were used by the people.  The canopy and draperies around the bed were usually for the purpose of protection from dusts and dirt coming from the ceiling of the room.  It was also used to avoid other clutters such as debris, droppings, plaster, insects and bugs as well as other matter which might fall off from the ceiling.

Years later, the rich people and royalty started using these beds.  But unlike the original canopy bed which were plain and simple, the royalty improved these beds to make them more artistically appealing.  Thus, beds with canopies started to be considered as an aesthetic piece of furniture used in the bedroom.

Most aristocratic and royal families started integrating drapes and curtains to the beds specifically intended to provide them warmth and also privacy.  During that time, servants and chamber maids stay and sleep in the same room as their master, hence, the necessity for the draperies to provide a higher level of privacy and security to the masters.

A more lavish and stylish designs for these beds were created at a later time. These styles were still used in the modern times, although a lot of other improvements and developments were initiated to enhance the look of the beds.  A more complex design was likewise introduced which includes carvings in the boards and posts and beams of the bed.  In the time of Queen Victoria, metal or iron frames were pioneered to afford an advance degree of durability.

Nowadays, you can still see various designs which were taken from different period or era.  These designs were improved and developed to catch up with the current fashion and trends.

Canopy Beds will completely transform the look of your bedroom so be ready for a dramatic change to your bedroom. Be sure to pick the canopy bed that best suits your own personality.

How to Create Tropical Dreams - Jungle Safari Themed Bedrooms

If your little boy or girl have exotic tastes and wild visions of swinging from lush green tress and bedding down besides a roaring campfire then a jungle safari might be just the bedroom theme he or she needs.

Jungle Safari Themed Beds Make for Tropical Dreams

Living in the wilderness (or at least feeling like you do) requires a bed appropriate for the elements. And since most beds seem way too civilized for rainforest dwelling, a custom theme bed in a more appropriate design might be in order. Consider a custom tree house bed, for example, with a wide tree trunk he or she can climb inside and a raised leafy wooden platform where he or she can sleep.

Not only does this create a natural loft bed, but it can also be built as a canopy bed, with the tree's leafy foliage canopy providing shelter, shade, privacy, and protection overhead.

Colors for a Jungle Safari Themed Bedroom

The most obvious colors to use in a jungle safari themed bedroom are varying shades of greens and browns. These can form the base of the room's color scheme, and will surely be the predominant colors used in the room's centerpiece - the custom theme bed (and its bedding, custom or otherwise).

From there, however, you have the same vast palette of vibrant colors as Mother Nature herself in filling out your child's rainforest fantasy. Bright reds and yellows evoke the exotic flair of tropical flowers and birds.

Don't Forget the Animals

Speaking of which, no jungle safari would be complete without members of the animal kingdom populating the landscape. Birds, for starters, are a must, such as parrots, macaws, toucans, etc. From there you can include tigers, elephants, lions, gazelles, zebras, leopards, giraffes, cheetahs, and such peeking through the dense foliage, be they painted into murals on the room's walls (or the walls of the custom theme bed) or incorporated into other bedroom elements like the bedding, supplementary furniture, and accessories. You can even include several stuffed animals, large and small, to fill out the picture.

The Ground Beneath Their Feet

Zebra, giraffe, and leopard print area rugs make perfect floor coverings for a jungle safari themed room. Beyond that, green carpeting can emulate the grassy forest floor while browns, whether hardwood or soft mats, evoke the dirt appropriate for both a jungle floor and a child's bedroom or, if you prefer, fallen leaves.

Canopy Bed Mistakes

So you think you want a canopy bed? Perhaps you've been seduced by that night of romance in the up market hotel you stayed at during your vacation last year. Well that's all well and good when you're on holiday in a swanky hotel, but transferring that glamor to your own home is another story. Buying and installing a canopy bed in your bedroom is not a project for the faint hearted. As an interior designer, I have seen many enthusiasts try and fail simply because they didn't have the vision to see what they were getting themselves into.

In this article we will look at some of the common mistakes people make when trying to recreate that lavish look. Maybe by the end of the article you might realize that a canopy bed isn't right for you. If that's the case then at least I will have saved you a large amount of money.

The first and most common mistake that buyers make is to assume that canopy bedding is right for them. It's not the canopy bed alone that creates the look. It's the size of the room, the accompanying furniture and the style of the interior design like the wall paper, curtains, paintwork etc. Too often I have seen a grand old four post bed stuck in a drab bedroom which is, frankly too small to take such a strong piece of furniture. Take a good look at your home first and ask yourself if it's truly set up right. If it's not, are you prepared to change the entire decor until it is?

Next up is the mistake of thinking you can make your own canopy bed with a few poles and some drapes. Unless you have a certain level and skill and a very good eye this is usually a disaster. D.I.Y canopy beds, perhaps unsurprisingly, nearly always look like you did it yourself! Don't undertake this option lightly.

Finally I have often seen people try to recreate the canopy bed look by using a canopy cover suspended by a ring in the ceiling and draped over the four points of the bed. I don't really think it matters how fancy this canopy cover is, it will always, in my opinion, look like a glorified mosquito net. This can be a cool "Out of Africa" look if you live in a suitable climate but otherwise it just looks ridiculous.

So to sum up, think carefully before adding a canopy bed to your home.
